More than 50% of French people aged 18-25 are interested in cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs)

32% of young French people own cryptocurrencies

The Parisian agency Heaven has just published a study dedicated to the perception of cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens (NFT) and the metaverse between French aged 18 to 25. As part of this survey, the advertising agency specializing in digital interviewed a panel of 538 young people living in France.

First observation, the French youth have solid knowledge on the universe of digital assets. Therefore, 67% of respondents say they know what cryptocurrencies are. 45% of young people between 18 and 25 also know the term NFT.

Finally, 34% of respondents say they know what the metaverse is. The less mainstream terms of the ecosystem, on the other hand, are less well known. This is the case with blockchain (22%), Web3 (10%) and DAO (9%).

Not surprisingly, they are mostly males who are interested in the world of cryptocurrencies and blockchains. 87% of respondents who know all terms related to Web3 are men.

According to the study, 32% of young people between 18 and 25 years old they already hold cryptocurrencies. According to an Adan / KPMG France study, this rate drops to 8% if the entire French population is taken into account. Heaven points out that 34% of respondents say they are interested in an investment. Definitely, “only 1 third of respondents seem resistant to cryptocurrencies”.

Investing in cryptocurrencies is led by desire to accumulate savings (52%), to take advantage of the rise in prices (44%), to diversify savings (37%), to free themselves from banks (22%) or to obtain better financial confidentiality (21%). Finally, 13% of young people living in France bought cryptocurrencies to send funds overseas.

49% of 18-25 year olds want to buy NFTs

Non-fungible tokens are less common in wallets young French people. Only 4% of respondents own digital works certified on blockchain. On the other hand, 49% of respondents say they want to take the plunge. However, 45% of young adults are not interested in the NFT sector.

Most respondents associate non-fungible tokens with digital artwork (51%) or video game objects / characters (50%). He also notes that many young French people say they enjoy games like Fortnite (52%) or Roblox (24%).

In this context, the video game seems to be one of the main doors of this generation to digital resources. Heaven believes it “Many people took refuge in video games during their periods of imprisonment”.

However, few young adults currently consult metaverse platforms. Alone 22% of young people between 18 and 25 go to the digital world accessible in virtual or augmented reality. On the other hand, 56% of respondents plan to do so in the future. 21% of respondents are not interested in the metaverse.

A study conducted by Yougov last February corroborates the results of Heaven’s poll. According to the study, 50% of young French people are interested in the idea of shopping in the metaverse. They also say they are ready to go to shows (51%), chat with new people (43%) and attend music events, such as concerts (42%).

The metaverse struggles to attract teenagers

We don’t notice the same enthusiasm for Web3 on teenagers. According to a study by Piper Sandler, a famous American investment bank, only 9% of American teenagers aged 16 say they want to equip themselves with a virtual reality headset to access the metaverse. The bank surveyed 7,100 teenagers for this study.

However, we learn that 26% of teens already have a virtual reality headset, but it just looks like that the accessory is not used regularly. Only 5% of respondents use it every day. Most of the teenagers surveyed rarely wear headphones (48%), although 68% consider themselves to be gamers.
